Motorola is said to be developing a rollable smartphone called Motorola Felix. The smartphone scales vertically rather than horizontally like other rollable prototypes. This phone is in the early stages of development and appears to have been around for at least a year.
Although Motorola’s sale to Lenovo in 2014 left its advanced projects and technology divisions to Google, the company remains at the forefront of the mobile industry with its third-generation foldable handset, a Razr-branded foldable handset dubbed Maven will be released at the end of this year.
About the Motorola Rollable Phone Motorola Felix
Motorola is in the early stages of developing an even more ambitious device called a rollable phone known internally as the Felix mobile.
Rollable as a category is still in its infancy. Oppo has developed a working concept phone, dubbed the X 2021, and LG was very close to launching a phone called the LG Rollable before shutting down its smartphone business entirely last year.
However, Moto Felix differs significantly from the two efforts of adopting a standard-sized, portrait-oriented smartphone that expands horizontally, with a flexible screen that stretches out to make it broader and more tablet-like in landscape orientation.
In Motorola’s first attempt at rollable technology, the device expands vertically so that about a third of the display wraps around the spindle underneath and faces back when compact. The motorized screen then unfolds, making the entire handset bigger, not more comprehensive, as with OPPO and LG devices.
It looks like it follows Motorola’s foldable technology. While other companies primarily use foldable displays to enlarge regular-sized phones, Motorola’s Razr lineup has focused on making the same-sized phones more pocket-friendly.

Here are some important caveats that stand out the most as Felix is still in its early stages of development. The software designed for it, enabled by Android 12’s new feature of splitting a single continuous display, had to be initially tested on a modified Edge 30 Pro.
This design goes well with Motorola’s current foldable phones. The company helped launch foldable at a time when many foldable phones targeted larger displays. In contrast, Motorola is focused on making phones more portable with the Razr 5G and the rumoured Razr 3, so a vertically extending display could fit the bill.
However, the device is clearly in an early stage of development. Too early, Motorola didn’t have a hardware prototype to test software for this display, so it had to go with a modified Edge 30 Pro.
Motorola Felix Release date
However, the Motorola Felix phone will be released at the end of 2023. Of course, plans are subject to change all the time, so they may take a completely different form or different characteristics before launch or may not be determined to be sustainable for the duration of the market.
