Motorola Edge Plus (2020) Review New Smartphone from Motorola

The Motorola Edge Plus is an advanced version of the Edge model. Motorola, which has been focusing on more cost-effective phones in recent years, introduced Edge Plus to re-enter the flagship smartphone market.

The headline features of this Verizon-exclusive phone include a curved display, high-capacity battery, three cameras, and 5G connectivity. Let’s find the full review of Motorola Edge Plus 2020.

Motorola Edge Plus Review 2022

The Motorola Edge Plus is Motorola’s first genuine flagship, boasting top-of-the-line specs, a stunning display, and three rear cameras. With 5G connectivity at the tap, the phone confirms every box as a serious competitor to the giants of Apple and Samsung.

Design and display

One of this phone’s most striking design features is its curved 6.7-inch display, which rotates the sides of the phone 90° to give it a stylish look. The display supports a resolution of 1080p and a smooth refresh rate of 90Hz. It also supports HDR10+ which enhances the brightness and color of the screen.

Unfortunately, the curvature of the screen is often an accidental click and forces Motorola to make the side buttons thinner than usual. Still, the screen looks great for displaying any media, and has some additional benefits, especially in mobile gaming.

You can give your phone a more traditional controller feel by enabling virtual buttons on the edged screen. Depending on the type of notification received, you can also activate lighting on the edged screen, which displays different colors.

Motorola Edge Plus has Gorilla Glass 5

The screen is made of Gorilla Glass 5 released in July 2016. Gorilla Glass is known for its toughness, but the curved display and glass body makes the phone still very delicate

Fingerprint

Below the screen, there is a fingerprint scanner that provides fast and consistent performance. The glass body is in a sturdy aluminum chassis.

Camera

Inside the large camera bump on the back of the phone are three individual lenses. Like many other smartphones in this tier, it has a wide-angle lens, an ultra-wide-angle lens, and a telephoto lens.

The main wide-angle lens has a 108MP sensor with an aperture of f/1.8. The large megapixel count works well in bright situations where there is a lot of light to be collected by the small pixels of the sensor and helps retain detail even with significant cropping.

A high megapixel count doesn’t naturally help shooting in low light due to the small pixel size, but Motorola has solved this problem with quad pixel binning.

The phone automatically combines the 4 pixels to get a better light. The resulting image will be 26 megapixels, which is still sufficient for most printing needs. The main camera also has optical image stabilization.

The ultra-wide-angle lens has 16 megapixels, an aperture of f/2.2, and the telephoto lens has 8 megapixels, an aperture of f/2.4. The telephoto lens features 3x optical zoom, 10x digital zoom, and optical image stabilization.

Next to the camera bump is a Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor. The front camera is 25MP and also utilizes quad pixel binning.

Shoot up to 6K

In video shooting, the Edge Plus can record up to 6K resolution at 30 fps, but only without electronic image stabilization. 4K at 30 fps and 1080p at 120 fps are also supported and can be recorded with electronic image stabilization. The front camera can record 1080p at 120fps.

Processor

The Motorola Edge Plus is on par with the Samsung S20 in terms of performance, with a Snapdragon 865 processor and Adreno 650 CPU, and 12GB of RAM. Like many other Motorola phones, the Edge Plus comes installed with a stock version of Android.

Operating system

It runs on Android 10 at the factory and supports major updates up to Android 12. The included My UX application allows you to better customize the Android experience to your liking.

5G Connection

In terms of connectivity, Edge Plus offers 5G, which significantly speeds up the phone’s downloads and uploads. Because of the novelty of 5G, support for 5G is not the most extensive. 5G coverage continues to expand rapidly, allowing Edge Plus to use 5G speeds in more places.

Storage

To store all your favorite things, Edge Plus comes with 256GB of internal storage. Unfortunately, there is no MicroSD card slot for storage expansion. 256GB is enough for most users, but if you’re someone who takes a lot of photos and videos, it might be limiting.

Audio quality

Edge Plus with audio has dual stereo speakers powered by Wave. The audio output quality is loud and clear and provides a great experience when viewing media.

The phone also has a traditional 3.5mm headphone jack, a port that most flagship phones on the market don’t have. This means you don’t need wireless headphones or clutter up your adapter.

Battery life

To power the device and all its features, the Edge Plus has a 5000mAh high-capacity battery, one of the largest on the market. The phone can easily be used for more than a day in normal use.

Charging

The 15W turbo power charger included with the phone can deliver disappointing speeds, but the phone is compatible with the 18W turbo power charger, which improves performance. Wireless charging is also supported and the phone can share power with other compatible phones at 5W.

Other things

This phone also has Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, and NFC.

Conclusion-Motorola Edge Plus 2020

If you’re a user looking to upgrade without getting into Verizon and/or unfamiliar territory, the Edge Plus will most definitely satisfy you. Its large battery and speed are on par with a similarly tiered phone like the Motorola Moto G Power 2022 and sometimes even bigger.
